1905 -- Elias Canetti lives, Rutschuk Bulgaria. Wrote Crowds & Power. Bulgarian-born English author, gets 1981 Nobel Prize for Literature.
Crowds & Power (1960), a multidisciplinary study that draws on history, folklore, myth, & literature on its analysis of mass movements. Canetti presented Hitler as the paranoiac ruler of crowds, fascinated by the size of the crowds he commands. Canetti's attack on the religion of power has been compared to the works of Gogol & Dostoyevsky.

1907 -- Théodule Meunier dies, imprisoned in Cayenne, where he had made failed to escape in a vain effort for freedom. French anarchist & practitioner of "propaganda by the deed." He wrote Jean Grave in 1906 that he had no regrets for his acts.

1907 -- France: The trial of the anarchist François Ravachol begins.

Ravachol had been pointed out to police by a waiter (the boy Jules Lhérot) in the restaurant Very, & on the 24th, the restaurant was bombed, killing its owner & a customer.

Lhérot fled the country, & a long cycle of vendetta between government repression & "illegalist" anarchists follows. Ravachol's trial resulted in a sentence of life at forced labor. The author of the present attack, the anarchist Théodule Miller, was arrested in London in June 1894. Tried & sentenced in July, he was sent to prison, where he died July 25, 1907. An article by Octave Mirbeau appears a week after the bombing, in "L'Endehors" 52 (May 1, 1892), giving one of the most balanced anarchist views of Ravachol's terrorist activity.

Luce Fabbri
1908 -- Luce Fabbri lives (1908-2000). Life-long anarchist, intellectual, teacher, poet & activist (& daughter of the famed Italian anarchist Luigi Fabbri).

Author many books, including La Libertad entre la Historia y la Utopia: Tres Ensayos y Otros Textos del Siglo XX (Freedom in History & Utopia: Three Essays & Other Texts of the 20th Century (REA, 1998, 145 pages). Luce died in Montevideo, Uruguay at the age of 92. Her life will be documented in a forthcoming biography by Margareth Rago.





1914 -- The day before leaving Barcelona for the US, 11-year-old Anaïs Nin makes the first entry in her diary:

"I am sad to think we are leaving a country that has been like a mother & a lucky charm to me."

Except for a four-month gap in 1917, she continues the diary for the rest of her life.

1920 -- Source=Robert Braunwart Will Rogers silent movie "Cupid, the Cowpuncher" is released. The sheep over ta the next ranch are gettin' very nervous.


1921 -- France: Mécislas Charrier, French anarchist individualist & illégaliste, attempts to rob the Paris-Marseilles train.

Mécislas Charrier & two accomplices attempted to rob the First Class travellers on the Paris-Marseilles train, but things go badly & one person is killed. Charrier was later arrested, & his accomplices killed. While not the killer, Charrier defended his anarchist illegalism at his trial (April 28, 1922) & defies the court to take his head.

It did exactly that, sending him to the guillotine on August 22, 1922, as he sang "l'Internationale," "L'hymne au 17e" & "La Carmagnole."

1927 -- Spain: Portuguese anarchist conference, relocated from Portugal, secretly meets in Valencia (July 25-26). Founding of the Federación Anarquista Ibérica (FAI).
A Portuguese military coup in May forces the anarchists move this conference to Spain. The Portuguese cofounded the the "F.A.I." (Iberian Anarchist Federation), which quickly became a significant revolutionary organization in both regions, opposing the reformism of some CNT leaders, & were involved in the National Plenum of Regionals in Madrid on October 30 & 31.

1927 -- Spain: Congress of the União Anarquista Portuguesa (UAP; Portuguese Anarchist Union) secretly held, in Valencia (July 25-26th). Originally scheduled for June 20, 1926 in Lisbon, Portugal, a rightwing coup in May of 1926 forced its cancellation & the move to Valencia. This congress marks the founding of the FAI (Federación Anarquista Ibérica).

From here he goes on to play 15 years with a variety of Negro teams. His lifetime batting average, a mere .423, he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972.

1936 -- Spain: Camillo Berneri arrives in Catalonia with a cargo of rifles & ammunition.

News of the fascist 'coup d'état' in Spain spread rapidly. With the slogan "Today in Spain, tomorrow in Italy" on their lips, Italian anti-fascists headed to Spain.

When Berneri arrived he was immediately offered a position in the Council of the Economy, but he refused as soon as he realized he was dealing with a sort of ministry. Berneri instead hosted a rally before 100,000 people in Plaza de los Toros, in Barcelona, bringing with him the greetings of the Italian anarchists & their solidarity with the Catalan revolution.

Also in Barcelona, the constructive work of the libertarian revolution is set up gradually; the transport sector & particularly the trams of Barcelona are collectivized by the C.N.T. They are followed by other public services, part of the sector of the distribution & provisioning, then by many industries, including the Hispano-Suiza automobile factories.

Francesco Barbieri, the Italian antifascist & anarchist militant, slipping back into Spain, reaches Barcelona today. Barbieri fought at the Huesca Front before illness forced him back to Barcelona in May 1937, where he was dragged from his home by Stalinists goons & murdered.




1938 -- Spain:

     November 16, 1938, the Republican army of Catalonia, made up of anarchist & communist forces, is defeated after three months by pro-Franco forces, leaving tens of thousands of casualties & dead.

The Republican forces had held for three months during the great battle on the front at the Ebre River.

1946 -- The Crime... Two young black couples — Roger & Dorothy Malcom, George & Mae Murray Dorsey — were killed by a lynch mob at the Moore's Ford Bridge over the Appalachee River connecting Walton & Oconee Counties. The four were tied up & shot hundreds of times in broad daylight by unmasked men; murder weapons included rifles, shotguns, pistols & a machine gun. The Tuskegee Institute called it a "lynching."

The Coverup... Despite an intense investigation by FBI & GBI agents, the killers remain free. "The best people in town won't talk," said Georgia State Patrol Major William E. Spence on the climate of fear & threat of retaliation that discouraged law abiding citizens from cooperating with the investigation

None of the mob have ever been brought to justice, & in 2005 there are still attempts to bring surviving murderers to justice.
